Exploring the hidden part of the iceberg: Post-partum weight retention among mothers and its association with sociodemographic, cultural and behavioural factors

IntroductionIndia accounts for more than 2/3rd of total deaths due to NCD's and South East Asian Regions make up 62% disease burden. Obesity being major risk factor NCD's, Post-Partum weight retention (PPWR) could be an important preventable predisposing factor, reducing one's acquiring NCD's. Objectives: (1) Determine Weight Retention among Mothers at near one-year post delivery determine its association with socio-demographic, cultural behavioural factors.MethodologyIt's a cross-sectional community based study, conducted Urban -Primary Health Centres Anganwadi centres Mysuru, Karnataka, India the mothers between 10 14 months post-delivery. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted recruit estimated sample size 150 Mothers. Data on pre-pregnancy obtained retrospectively from Maternal Child cards present weight, waist circumference, hip circumference were measured using standardized procedures. sociodemographic, factors collected culturally pre-tested self-administered questionnaire. analysed SPSS V25 (Licensed institution).Results91.3% retained post-partum. Among them, 55% had shifted higher category Body Mass Index. Significant Statistical difference seen w.r.t frequency breast feeding, consumption cereals/fat, practice food taboos physical activity PPWR without PPWR.Conclusion RecommendationSignificant Proportion PPWR.
